NASA가 화성에서 보내온 화성의 컬러영상을 공개했습니다. 스피릿이 처음으로 보내온 컬러영상은 화성 표면을 12개로 분할해 촬영한 모자이크 영상입니다. 스피릿에 장착된 파노라마 카메라 책임자인 짐 벨은 천2백만 화소로 된 이 영상은 지금까지 화성에서 촬영된 그 어떤 사진보다도 3-4배 선명한 것이라고 설명했습니다.
지질학에 조예가 없거나 관심이 없는 사람이라면 그냥 황량한 붉은 사막으로 우주 잡지에 나온 그림 정도로 볼 수 있지만, 이 사진에는 매우 중요한 단서들이 들어 있다는 사실을 알면 매우 흥미로울 것으로 생각됩니다. 사진 속에는 사막같이 평평한 화성의 지평선과 곳곳에 작은 바위들이 흩어져 있는 지표면의 모습, 그리고 스피리터가 착륙할 때 촬영한 에어백의 흔적이 함께 담겨져 있습니다.

미국 항공우주국(NASA)의 쌍둥이 화성탐사 로봇 중 첫번째인 "스피리트"(Spirit)가 7개월 가까운 우주여행을 마치고 오는 4일 화성에 착륙한다고 합니다. 화성탐사 로봇 스피리트는 화성이 생명체가 존재할 만한 습지였는지 여부를 포함한 화성탐사를 위해 지난해 6월10일 화성을 향해 발사되었었고, 1개월 뒤에 발사된 쌍둥이 탐사로봇인 `오퍼튜니티(Opportunity)는 오는 25일 화성에 착륙할 예정이라고 합니다.
유럽 최초의 화성탐사선인 마스 익스프레스호의 착륙선 비글 2호가 화성 대기권 진입 이후 통신이 두절된 데 반해 이번 착륙이 성공할지 관심을 모으고 있습니다. 이번 착륙과정은 NASA TV와 인터넷에서 생중계 하게 됩니다. 중계 일정은 다음과 같습니다.

MITs lab. of sedimentology makes combinational research between sedimentology and digital computing. My intentests have focused on that yet.
MITs Digital Geology is the application of new technologies to geological field studies. Geological processes occur in three dimensions, but for geologists it is commonly difficult or impossible to capture and analyze data from complex or mountain-sized outcrops in three dimensions. For the development and testing of process models of stratigraphic development as well as the application of these models to understanding heterogeneity in petroleum and groundwater reservoirs, it is increasingly important to obtain high-resolution, three-dimensional data from outcrops.

Active research at MIT in the field of digital geology is currently centered on the development of digital tools for field geology. Current projects consist of developing customized software for geologic mapping that runs on top of ESRIs ArcPad GIS software for iPAQ handheld computers, creating communications protocols to allow wireless interfaces between handheld computers, digital cameras, laptop computers, and other peripherals, and prototyping a digital geologists compass capable of the capture and storage of structural measurements in conjunction with handheld computers. Each of these projects has been underway since the fall of 2001.
